There are times you may not want to make changes to an original document, and want to work on a copy instead. To quickly do this, follow these instructions:
Open Word or Excel, depending on the file you want to open, and go to “File > Open”.
If the file is in your recent files list, right click the file and select “Open a copy”.
If the file is not in your recent files list, navigate to the folder where the file is saved, and click the dropdown list on the “Open” button and select “Open a copy”.
When you do this a copy of the file will be opened, rather than the original file.
