How is your storage space being used

Unless you have a very new computer with a large 1000GB hard drive, sooner or later you will realise you’ve managed to fill up your hard drive with photos, files, etc. and it’s time to do some spring cleaning!

Knowing what files are using up all the space on your computer is difficult to find out with some help, s this article is about a program that is free to use that will show you how the storage space available on your computer is being used, helping you decide what folders you may be able to delete to free up some space.

Go to www.jam-software.com/freeware/ and click the Download button for the TreeSize Free program. This will take you to the download page. Click the download button and the installer file will start to download. Once the download is complete, double click the downloaded file to install the TreeSize software.

Once it is completed installing, select the option to run TreeSize, or press the Windows key on your keyboard and type “treesize” to open it from the Start menu. If TreeSize doesn’t start to analyse your files and folders automatically, go to the Scan menu and click on the entry for your hard drive, this is usually the C drive.

Once the scan has completed, it will display a list of your folders with the heaviest ones at the top. Just like you do in Explorer, you can double click a folder to see what is inside that folder. If the folder contains more folders, the heaviest folders will always be shown at the top, allowing you to quickly narrow down on what is using up your storage space.

Care needs to be taken before deleting any files – only delete files that you have created yourself, such as images and documents. Your own documents will be located in the Users folder. If you have any doubts as to what you can delete and what you can’t ask someone you trust to assist you. Once you have deleted some files, click the Rescan button to update the report.
