It’s a great idea to add photos to letters you write in Word and pictures to your school assignments. Pictures make your documents come alive and they help you illustrate what you are saying. Microsoft Word has some fun tools that you can use to add effects and borders to your photos. Here’s how:

Click on an image in a Word document and from the Ribbon choose Picture Tools > Format tab. You can change the color of the image by clicking the Color dropdown list and then select a Variation. Use the color tone to make the image look more yellow (warmer) or blue (colder). The Recolor options include a sepia tone option to make the image look old. Use the Saturation options to make the photo brighter.

To add a border to the photo select a Picture Style from the Picture Styles gallery. These styles automatically add a border and border effect to your photo.
To make a photo look completely different, click the Artistic Effects button to preview the effects. You can choose from effects such as Pencil Grayscale which makes the photo look as if it were drawn in pencil, Texturizer adds a canvas style texture to it and Light Screen gives it the look of a mosaic.

For more control over the effect, click Artistic Effects > Artistic Effects Options, select the effect from the dropdown list and adjust the Transparency to see more or less of the original image through the effect. Depending on the effect you have chosen there may be other settings you can configure such as the Grid Size shown here for the Light Screen effect.
